Abstract
Summary form only given. A program to develop diagnostics was begun with the first program to extract and control the electron beams for use in simulations and fusion research. Calorimeters to measure beam energy and deposition profiles and fluxmeters to measure beam currents were developed in the first. Resistively read faraday cups to measure anode or intercepted beam currents followed this. Megavolt voltage dividers operating in vacuum and transformer oil followed. A diagnostics laboratory was set up where calibration equipment having a bandwidth of DC to 1 GHZ and about 5% accuracy was maintained. Critical parts common to many diagnostics were designed and stocks maintained so diagnostics for specific accelerators or experiments could be rapidly designed, fabricated and calibrated. Among the units routinely built and calibrated were calorimeters, electron beam and X-ray, multi-megamp faraday cups and search coils (Rowgowski coils), megavolt resistive monitors for oil and vacuum, capacitive voltage sensors for water lines, inductive current monitors for water lines, multi megavolt vacuum load resistor and capacitive cable voltage sensors for trigger timing.
