Abstract
The need for an integrated access environment from customers to the network is discussed along with the requirements of such an environment. The ability of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) based systems to satisfy these needs is discussed, and an evolutionary scenario is proposed which enables a smooth transition from current networks to a fully integrated ATM network capable of handling all services
