Abstract :
Details regarding Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) infrastructure installed in the New Zealand (NZ) transmission grid are presented. Currently, Phasor data are being used for model validation and monitoring network oscillations. Mathematical formulation of an Extended Complex Kalman Filter technique, a technique for oscillation monitoring, is proposed and its performance is assessed using real-disturbance data. Further, as part of Transpower´s Transmission 2040 project, more applications in areas like voltage stability, state estimation and wide area protection have been proposed. In this context, the paper summarizes potential pathways for implementing these applications using PMU data in order to enhance the transmission security, especially during instances of highly stressed NZ grid operation.
