  • Abstract
    The authors discuss the efforts at Sandia National Laboratories in developing the adaptive conceptual model manager within the constraint of environmental decision-making. A computer workstation that hosts the conceptual model manager and the Sandia Environmental Decision Support System (SEDSS) is also discussed. The SEDSS currently addresses the problems of monitor-well network design. Mathematical models of the site´s geohydrology are used to determine likely flow paths and to place wells optimally. Using computational models of flow in the unsaturated and saturated zones, and applying Monte Carlo simulation techniques to sample parameters describing their conceptual model of the site´s hydrology and geology, it is possible to determine where one might optimally locate wells around the site to achieve a desired probability of plume detection should a leak occur
