            Abstract : 
The ever increasing consumers demand for bandwidth and physical limits of conventional wireline modems have led to development of alternative high rate data transmission solutions. One promising such alternative is transmission of data over the existing hybrid-fiber coax (HFC) network. Stanford Telecom has developed a low cost single chip subscriber modem, STEL-2176 “SuperChip”, for HFC applications. Development of novel algorithms, optimized application of existing robust algorithms and efficient hardware implementation have made STEL-2176 a commercially viable high performance ASIC. This paper will address the achievements of Stanford Telecom in developing the downstream demodulator portion of this system
