            Abstract :
The paper considers the use of software components and the support of C++ and Java languages. It discusses how objects can be re-used, upgraded and support legacy code. It considers the paradigm shift from client-server to distributed services and the use of CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) and IDL (Interface Definition Language). Distributed embedded systems are reviewed, including multi-tier architectures and embedded objects
