Abstract
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently closing control towers at small Alaskan airports and replacing the personnel with telemetered meteorological instrumentation. Pilots are concerned that there are no “eyes” at these remote airports. We propose a low cost alternative, namely the addition of a live video link. As a representative example, we designed a 13 GHz microwave communications link allowing the, Airstrip in Homer, Alaska to be viewed by a control tower in Seldovia. The various components of this project were divided up into responsibility for the Fresnel zone and look angle calculations, the verifying of various manufacturer specifications, and assisting with the selection of the chosen microwave path and responsibility for the site drawings and parts specifications, the microwave system configuration, a cost analysis, and a few link analysis calculations
