Abstract :
A noninvasive continuous arterial blood pressure recording device, Finapres, developed by K.H. Wesseling et al. (1986) was used to investigate cardiovascular reactivity during several experimental stressors. Blood volume as recorded by an infrared plethysmograph is clamped to a set point value by adjusting cuff pressure in parallel with intra-arterial pressure by means of an electro-pneumatic servo-control system. Plotting pressure and heart rate parameters on a XY-vector scale made it possible to establish different autonomic nervous reactivity patterns for cognitive, emotional, and physical stressors.
