Recent changes to the UK mining industry have presented new and more demanding problems to all engineering disciplines both within and supplying the industry. Against thick backcloth, the author identifies how the development and application of systems technology has contributed towards improvements in efficiency and productivity whilst maintaining high standards of safety in the use of electrical equipment in a hazardous environment
