Abstract
An automatic procedure is developed to construct the optimal soft-decision quantizer and branch metric, based on the cutoff rate criterion that determines the optimal soft-decision vector quantization regions, for the Viterbi (1967) decoder over any memoryless channel. As only samples of the received symbols are required, this procedure finds applications in many practical channels
