Abstract
This paper provides the background and introduces the concept of Modular Transformer Converter (MTC) system as a power flow controller for transmission substations. The MTC based power flow controller is desired also to provide back-up function due to aging and failure of transmission transformers. Several different connection configurations for the MTC based power flow controller are proposed and compared. The proposed MTC solution offers controllable and increased power flow margins as well as improved system performance under line faults and system disturbances. The proposed MTC solution is aimed at being scalable, transportable, efficient, and to increase reliability for transmission systems.
