Abstract
Network management specifications called HLM (heterogeneous LAN management) are discussed. HLM specifications allow for the development of management products that function with a variety of network operating systems. HLM supports communication between the operating system and network adapters and functions regardless of the cabling media used to connect devices on the network. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) basic network management system functions are summarized. Criteria for the implementation of flexible, effective network management systems are given
