Abstract
The methodology used to achieve a suitable computer network design for a chip manufacturing plant is discussed. The requirements of computer networking for a typical plant are described. Based on these requirements, various alternative solutions are generated. These alternatives are discussed in view of performance criteria and cost effectiveness. A suitable solution is derived to achieve high reliability and fast response time. It is based on the installation of various LAN segments conforming to IEEE 802.3 standards, and interconnected to each other by means of fiber-optic bridges/repeaters and fiber-optic cable
