Abstract :
A renewable energy and sustainability training center has to inspire the participants at the outset with models of self-sustainable renewable sources of energy. With this idea in mind a fully sustainable renewable energy training center is constructed to help participants appreciate the concept of green and sustainable energy. The training center located at Muppandal, Tamil Nadu, India was chosen for its suitability to harness principle forms of renewable energy like solar, wind, biomass and bio-fuels. The training center set-up in an area of 1 hectare is designed to be independent and self-sufficient for its sustenance with generation of in-house supplies of renewable energy and localized food chain for the kitchen. Just as on-site generation of green energy is envisaged, to make the training center fully sustainable and green, nutrition supplement to the kitchen is obtained through organic farming in the campus. A green vehicle using renewable source of energy generated at the center is made available to facilitate transportation of participants. The construction of the buildings adheres to the green norms too with emphasis on optimum use of daylight and proper ventilation. The green buildings are designed to conserve energy by making them retain warmth during winter and losing heat during summer so as to reduce the use of power in the buildings. State-of-art renewable technologies from different countries have been adapted in the building to give the building a decisive edge in conserving energy.
