Abstract :
Summary form only given. Dc and ac high voltages have been generated by "air core" transformers dating back to Tesla and Abramyan. At North Star Power Engineering (NSPE), we have used "air core" transformers to build both dc accelerators and dc power supplies. Recently we developed a technique to efficiently "relay" or transfer magnetic flux through a series of coils in which the coils are not in any way physically connected with one another. The coils are arranged so that each couples strongly to many of its neighbors and each has its own resonating capacitor. For these reasons we have named it a Multiple Coupled Resonator (MCR). The MCR concept lends itself to a variety of applications due to its unique nature including power transfer, high voltage ac and high voltage dc. The first application of this technique is the production of dc high voltage in an air at 150 kV and in SF6 at 200 kV and 10 mA. A design for a 600 kV version of this supply, which is applicable to irradiation, ion acceleration, capacitor bank charging, and a variety of other applications, has been developed. We believe that this technology will find application in power supplies operating from 100 s of kV up to several MeV and kilowatts of output power.
