Abstract :
A method for shrinking a tunable microstrip patch antenna footprint is investigated. A reduced-area antenna at 60GHz is designed by taking advantage of the capacitive range of an IMPATT diode, being careful to maintain Q over a 2GHz bandwidth. To determine the capability of this tunable antenna system, the inductive extreme of the impedance tuning range is also evaluated for impact to resonance frequency. Further, results from the transmission line model used for analysis and design are confirmed using Sonnet Software´s professional EM solver.
