Abstract
An integer cosine transform (ICT) has been shown to be a promising alternative to the DCT for its implementation simplicity, close performance, and compatibility with the DCT. An image processing unit based on a ICT chip set has been developed. This unit is most useful in image archiving systems such as electronic albums. The chip set has two custom designed chips, referred to as the ICT chip and the data sequencer chip. Both chips are implemented on a 3-μm CMOS gate array with 2800 gates. The chip set can compute a 2-D order-8 ICT in less than 19 μs. The speed can be even faster in inverse transform if high sequence coefficients are truncated
