Abstract :
Research progress on the development of compact kinetic-to-electrical energy convertors for airborne demining systems is presented and discussed. Energy conversion is accomplished using either magnetic flux or piezoelectric compressor (i.e. MFC and PZC) schemes. The output power from these devices range up to 10 MW over a 1 microsecond pulse length. Critical design issues for these devices are also presented and include generating the "seed" current and maximization of the inductance change for the MFC device and dimensioning the piezoelectric element for the PZC device. The selection of compact and efficient antenna structures is also discussed since radiating the power generated from these devices into the ground is also critical. Other applications of the kinetic-to-electrical energy converters include long-range geological surveying, remote sensing, and mining.
