Abstract :
Nowadays research is being performed in the field of electric energy guns, high power microwaves and laser systems. Next to new sensors such as pulsed sonar and ultra wide band radar, these weapon systems exhibit pulsed operation and require electrical energy at the gigawatt power level. A short description of the mentioned weapon and sensor systems is given and the method to calculate the required power to be installed is demonstrated by means of an example. It is shown that for a single weapon system the required power is high and therefore, integration of propulsion, weapons and sensor systems is inevitable and asks for dedicated energy management strategies.
