Abstract
The fundamental more electric aircraft (MEA) concept, which removes hydraulic, pneumatic and gearbox driven subsystems in favor of electrical driven subsystems, has necessitated the development of high performance starter/generator systems and compact lightweight motor drives. This paper summarizes technology developments made during the ten years since the inception of the Air Force´s MEA initiative. Emphasis is placed on describing advancements in power electronic components necessary to realize advancements in starter/generator and motor drive system to meet Air Force needs. Specific examples of the advantages afforded by silicon carbide switch and rectifier integration and high energy density capacitor and magnetic technologies are presented.
