Abstract :
This paper presents electromagnetic and structural continuum formulations including anisotropic material properties that are then used in the coupled analysis of high-speed permanent magnet machines. The tooth/winding region of the machine is modelled by an anisotropic permeability and effective current density, and composite structural materials such as carbon-fiber epoxy rings are modelled with anisotropic compliances. These formulations are then used in the design of a motor/generator and inertial rim of a flywheel energy storage system. The continuum formulation results compare well with finite element analysis.
