Abstract :
This paper presents an approach for security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) with phase shifter application to improve transmission congestion, wind curtailment and enhance system reliability. Phase shifter is used to control the flow of real power in transmission line by manipulating the phase angle difference. By controlling the flow, it mitigates transmission congestion, improves transmission system stability, and increases the access to wind and other renewable resources through available transmission lines. The main contribution of this paper is the development of SCUC formulation with an alternative solution technique to optimize phase shifter. The performance is evaluated through simulations based on eight-bus system. The paper also analyzes the impact of phase shifter on locational electricity price, system contingency, wind curtailment, and economic.
