Abstract
The monitoring of a numerical control (NC) machine tool is described. The proposed monitoring system is based on a novel approach to the monitoring of industrial processes. This approach was developed for monitoring systems with embedded detection, diagnosis, and decision procedures. The monitoring system is implemented on a PC-based computer system. The monitor system is used as a supervisor controller and a monitor for the process and the machine accessories. The main application involves the detection of the tool wear. The action on the NC is to correct the tool advance and to invoke an emergency shutdown. Experimental work is being carried out on a turning machine with a NUM-460 control system
