Abstract
The authors describe a compact and efficient CMOS VLSI to support the ISDN (integrated services digital network) basic access interface in the CCITT I-series recommendations. The VLSI design is discussed, with attention given to the user interface for implementing various ISDN terminals. The VLSI includes a microprocessor and several peripheral functional modules for supporting layer 1, 2, and 3, for the basic access interface. Some attractive applications, such as a digital telephone with terminal adapter, a G4 facsimile, and a voice and data integrated terminal based on a lap-top computer are introduced
