Abstract
The author advocates the recognition and development of sound as a necessary component of the communications user interface and provides examples of how this can be achieved. He reviews current practice in this area, and illustrates why sound should play a greater role. He also suggests specific techniques to accomplish this, and concludes by outlining what is needed to apply these techniques within the communications industries
