Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to outline the position with regard to the Scottish Office Road Directorate´s development of a National Driver Information and Control Strategy for Scotland. There is an increasing realisation that investment in roads infrastructure is only part of the solution to dealing with traffic growth. Large sums are being invested in: driver information and control management systems; the US IHVS (Intelligent Vehicle Highway System) programme; and the case of the EC DRIVE programme. Scotland with a well defined Central Belt fed by a handful of long haul routes offers a particularly favourable opportunity for the effective application of this new technology
