Abstract :
IETF RFC1577 “Classical IP and ARP over ATM” specification supports IP services on ATM network configured as a LIS (Logical IP Subnetwork) using ATMARP protocol. This classical IPOA is an approach to accommodate simply the traditional IP network into newly growing ATM network. Since the classical IPOA stays traditional hop-by-hop IP routing architecture, however, it is not elegant solution for ATM networks that support direct communications between entities. Thus, we have investigated the way of how to provide direct communications without help of any intermediate IP routers. And we found that it is possible to resolve the global address space by using only classical IPOA protocol. The global address space means the whole IP addresses within an ATM subnetwork. In this paper, we propose a global address resolution scheme for IP and ARP over ATM. This scheme provides to resolve the ATM address of any entity within the whole ATM network from its IP address, so that it can be achieved the direct communications by ATM routing policy, but no more IP routing. And it is fully compatible the classical IPOA by using the same protocol set as described in RFC1577. In addition, we also present the network configurations for our scheme as an aspect of ARP client and server. And finally, we introduce the test-bed network for our experiments
