Abstract
For the arbitrary thinned array antennas, the elements removed by thinning results in an often unacceptably high sidelobes level, this retarded the large-scale applications of the arbitrary thinned array antennas. A new method based on iterative reweighed least square (IRLS) algorithm is proposed in order to suppress the high sidelobes of the beam pattern. Instead of optimizing the weight coefficients directly, the method is aimed to minimize the peak sidelobe of the beam pattern by an elaborate designed FIR filter. Beside the suppression of the sidelobes, the mainlobe shape also can be controlled by this method. Example simulations are shown to illustrate the effectiveness of this method
