China´s increased development of economy and trade surplus has been accompanied by the growth of carbon emissions embodied in international trade in recent years. Within the method of input-output analysis, this paper estimates the carbon emissions embodied in exports and imports of China in 2007. The results indicate that emissions embodied in net exports of China were 514.09 MtC, representing almost 30% of China´s total emissions of the same year, while 417.58 MtC of emissions avoided as a result of importing goods from other countries, rather than manufacturing domestically. In addition, the results of carbon emissions embodied by sectors showed that only 5 sectors avoided emitting domestically through international trade while the others increased domestic carbon emissions of China owing to providing goods or services for foreign markets.
