Abstract
Frame relaying, which is specified in CCITT Recommendation I.122 as an ISDN (integrated services digital network) additional packet mode bearer service for data communications, is described in terms of: the data-transfer characteristics as viewed from a user´s perspective; the architectural streamlining of network functions for performance gains through the use of out-of-band call control and link layer multiplexing; the different arrangements for interworking between frame relaying services and between frame relaying and other data services, and the status of standards development. It is shown how the architectural streamlining of network functions gives frame relaying lower delay, greater throughput, and a higher access rate than existing services
