Abstract :
This paper discusses the design process for finalization of vent design for overall superior motor performance. It presents a comparative study between two different vent shapes i.e. circular and trapezoidal shaped vents. It discusses in detail the various nuances to be taken into considerations while designing axially cooled induction motors. It emphasizes the importance that must be given to the profile of axial vents, as well as their location and number for avoiding magnetic saturation and enhancing thermal performance. FEA based analysis has been used extensively to support the study. Electromagnetic analysis is performed to understand the magnetic saturation in the rotor core. The CFD result comparison has also been provided for vent holes. Mass flow rate is determined and compared to understand the heat transfer capability of the design. Modal analysis is done to ascertain the dynamic characteristics.
