Abstract :
Summary form only given. Presented is a stable, hybrid, biotic/abiotic system for engineering functional materials that inherently process information and offer the promise of engineering materials that manifest higher-order functionality. Examples include systems for engineering materials that incorporate coupled-protein functionally to enable energy transduction at the molecular scale. This was followed by discussions of molecular systems that utilize this energy to power a new functional device, the excitable vesicle (EV), a nano-scale material that mimics the production of voltages and currents associated with many living cells
