Abstract :
A high-resolution sonar for displaying stereoscopic views of three-dimensional objects is described. A simplified prototype sonar has been constructed for demonstrations in a controlled test environment. The vertical dimension is resolved by a combination of the human viewer´s stereoscopic vision and ability to infer three-dimensional information from a rotating display. The sonar is intended for use with hard-skinned objects in an underwater environment. After further development, it is intended that the method be used to assist robotic arm manipulations in turbid water
