Abstract :
Summary form only given. We present results on RF plasma formation in air in the presence of broadband-visible to near IR-radiation. These initial studies will be done at relatively low pressure, a few torr or less. Our aim is to assess the degree to which photodetachment of electrons from O/sub 2//sup -/ can increase the steady state electron number density for a given RF energy input. The work will be done utilizing our 1.2 m diameter Plexiglas spherical chamber, which has been instrumented and used for plasma studies. This facility is equipped for electron density measurements using microwave interferometry. The light sources will be small quartz-halogen lamps with a total power of one or two kilowatts illuminating a small volume of plasma in the sphere.
