  • Abstract
The authors provide an overview of the NASA Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) and discuss the value of the technology for future communication systems. The high-risk technologies selected for ACTS were those having the potential to dramatically enhance the capabilities of the satellite communications industry. This experimental satellite, which is scheduled to be launched in 1992, will furnish very small aperture terminal digital networks which provide on-demand full mesh connectivity, 1.544 Mb/s services with only a single hop. Utilizing on-board switching and processing, each individual voice or data circuit can be separately routed to any location in the network
