Abstract
Uplink bandwidth allocation schemes have attracted much attention in the Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) system owing to the topological structure of the optical network unit (ONU) sharing bandwidth in the uplink. The paper analyses current bandwidth allocation algorithms, and provides a new dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme, which has fixed period and utilizes cyclic polling, based on the self-similarity character of network traffic. Simulation results show that the scheme ensures the quality of services (QoS) of different services with higher priority and can improve uplink bandwidth utilization.
