Abstract
An enhanced electromagnetic transient simulation model of power system swings applicable for the analysis of operation behavior of digital distance protection is proposed. This model is based on the EMTP software. Compared with the existing design, this model meets with the law of electromechanical transient phenomenon. With the investigation of frequency during the transient process, the polynomials are used for fitting the variation of frequency. With this model, the key parameters of power swings can be determined and set to provide enough typical data for the evaluations of the behaviors of all types of relays. Compared with the modeling method using EMTDC software, this model can provide similar functionality but implemented with the free version of EMTP software. Finally, the availability of this model is validated with the EMTP simulation tests.
