Abstract
The differences between fixed telephony and mobile telephony can be categorised by comparing the public perceptions of these two services. In general, fixed telephony is perceived to have: low charges; high reliability and availability; no user maintenance; mobility limited to the household; basic supplementary services; and universal fax and data. Mobile telephony is perceived to have: high charges; medium reliability; medium user maintenance; excellent mobility; voice service only; and extensive network facilities. Another issue which is of vital importance to the cost of provision of wireless and wired networks is the interconnect cost between the wired and wireless networks
