Abstract :
This paper presents two new bi-directional WDM ring architectures for broadband interoffice networks with inter-node switching consolidation. One of the architectures offers 70% protection, and the other ensures 100% protection, against possible failures of a cable break or one slave node crash. Both architectures guarantee 50% protection at the collapse of one of the two hub nodes. The paper also presents a new optical add-drop multiplexer very suitable for bi-directional WDM rings. For a given number of wavelengths available, the new architectures increase the total inter-node switching capacity to four times, not twice, that of a uni-directional WDM ring network
