Abstract :
The paper describes a new method for phase noise measurement and a virtual instrument capable of investigating the phase noise spectral contents of sinusoidal carriers in a wide range of frequencies offset with variable frequency resolution. The proposed method harmonizes two complementary digital signal processing approaches already proposed by the authors and carries out a multiresolution analysis, in which the closer to the carrier the analysis the finer the frequency resolution granted. The paper provides the theoretical background and reports the results of experimental tests, carried out by means of a virtual instrument, that validate the proposed method.
