Abstract :
Two major aspects of our work in the area of mobile communications are described. The first is the development of a mathematical framework for modeling teletraffic performance of cellular communications. The approach which is based on multidimensional birth-death processes enables the formulation of analytically tractable models to investigate teletraffic characteristics of many important configurations. A fair amount of physical complexity can be accommodated. The methodology can be used for systems with single and multiple call platforms, various priority schemes for hand-offs, mixed platform types having different mobility characteristics in the same system, mixed call types (voice, data, images, etc.) in the same system, loss, delay and hybrid type service systems, quotas and limits on platform types and on call, types, as well as hierarchically overlaid cellular structures. The second aspect is a family of channel borrowing and sharing schemes for cellular communications which we call CBWL (channel borrowing without locking). The scheme which can be easily managed and implemented allows the real time shifting of spectral resources to accomodate call demands. The result is increased capacity at a given blocking probability.
