Abstract :
Lightning-induced surges have posed a significant threat to electronic equipment for many years, especially since semiconductors superseded thermionic technology. In this paper, an attempt is made to identify trends which will determine the likely prospects for electronic equipment over the next few years. First, some of the factors determining susceptibility to damage are considered: (i) the frequency of lightning discharges; (ii) equipment susceptibility; and (iii) economic factors. Methods of protection are then reviewed. In conclusion, the authors discuss protection components and the effect of standardisation of surge protection devices
