Abstract
A variant of the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) protocol known as idle-signal casting multiple access (ICMA), which is suitable for use in a mobile radio LAN where the effect of multipath signal fading on the performance of the protocol is not insignificant, is described and analyzed. The analysis differs from previous work in that the model incorporates specifically the effects of signal fading on channel access and packet transmission. Numerical results, which are validated by simulation results, are obtained using a realistic example to permit a quantitative study of the performance of the protocol
