Abstract :
To accommodate the large capacity demanded in long-distance submarine cable systems, an optical transmission using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers is being intensively investigated. The standard amplifier noise analysis suggests that a periodic optical amplification can exceed the transoceanic distance of the regenerative span length. In fact, the recent experiments demonstrated the potential of transmission beyond 10000 km at multigigabit-per-second bit rates. In this work, the analytical problem of optical amplifier transmission is revisited using rigorous theories. At the same time, the model of computer simulation is discussed to understand the behavior of this type of system, which is unlikely to be analytically predicted
