  • Abstract
Summary from only given, as follows. Inductance Matrices are a Common feature of most commercial electromagnetic packages. Their utilization in motor design can however be confusing, because the inductance formulae used by most codes makes inherent assumptions about the way the windings are connected which are not in keeping with their actual arrangement in general. Often the motor designer wishes to maximize average drive torque to the exclusion of cogging and reluctance forces. Proper use of inductance matrixes can greatly speed up design optimization in allowing the designer to extract these average quantities quickly. To illustrate the point, we examine the design of a brushless DC motor (or synchronous magnet motor), for a linear 2D based jig. Cogging and drive force are predicted and displayed with their positional dependence. The average of these quantities is also predicted by proper assignment of the conductors in the rotor and stator using the inductance matrix. Care must be exercised when using multiple conductors to account for how a field based calculation assumes the conductors are wound; the definition of the conductors is critical.
