Crowd-measuring: Assessing the quality of mobile Internet from end-terminals

Allowing mobile Internet customers to evaluate the quality of the service they are being provided empowers them as consumers, hence driving competition. However little research has been done in this issue. On this context, we introduce early work on our monitoring solution which integrates the data collected through the use of a passive monitoring tool that can be installed on Android terminals with the data collected through web proxies and end servers. Our contribution is two-fold: we provide a new technique for passive monitoring of 2G/3G QoS, as well as a tool that can be installed by mobile phone users in order to monitor their service statistics. Once results are obtained, we expect to have enough data to provide a characterization of the mobile Internet landscape in Chile.
