Abstract :
An application of a narrowband radar technology to ice thickness measurement is presented. The method used offers particular advantages for short-distance measurements conforms to FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations for unlicensed operations, and functions in unfavorable environmental conditions that affect optical and ultrasonic devices. The conventional FW-CW (frequency modulation, continuous wave) resolution is improved by inclusion of a phase shifter and by performing additional signal processing functions. Experimental data show better than 0.5-in accuracy using only a 150-MHz bandwidth.<>
