This paper analyzes the static thrust, the detent force and the normal force of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) using finite element method (FEM). The forces of a short primary type PMLSM and a short secondary type PMLSM are compared. To reduce the detent force, the effect of the magnet width is studied
