Abstract
A key issue in the performance of Video-on-Demand systems is the management of the data storage, typically based on disk arrays located with the server. The high bit rate associated with the medium, as well as the aim of supporting a large number of parallel streams, necessitate careful design and management of disk arrays. One of the related problems is the assignment of buffer space at the video server in order to harmonise differences in retrieval and transmission rates of the streams. In this article, we conduct a number of experiments with MPEG-4 compressed video, in order to obtain buffering occupancy values for various parallel streams.
