Abstract
Two technologies that will increase an optical fiber´s capacity by allowing it to carry two optical signals are discussed. They are wavelength-division multiplexing and directional coupling techniques. Some practical design considerations are given, and recent laboratory results are summarized. Possible cost savings for systems using these techniques are briefly considered
